Selena the Serene Mermaid - Your Guide to Getting the Most Out of Letter Eight of The Mermaid Mail Series

The eighth letter in the Mermaid Mail series introduces a truly important lesson - the power of rest! In this letter, Selena the Serene mermaid learns from the gentle, slow-moving manatees that taking time to slow down, recharge, and simply be is just as important as being busy.

In a world that often celebrates being fast, productive, and always on the go, this letter reminds children (and adults!) that resting isn’t lazy - it’s smart!

Resting is Important – and It’s Not Just for Manatees!

At the beginning of the letter, the mermaid feels tired and worn out - her tail is dragging, her singing voice sounds croaky, and everything feels like too much. Sound familiar?

This is a wonderful opportunity to talk to your child about how their own body and mind give them signs when they need a rest.

You can use the opportunity to ask your child:

  • “How do you know when your body needs a break?”
  • “What helps you feel calm and rested?”
  • “Can you think of a time when resting made you feel better afterward?”

The manatees in the letter show us that it’s okay to slow down. They don’t rush. They glide through the water, taking their time, and they still get where they need to go.

Children (especially those who are naturally active or find it hard to pause) can benefit from learning to listen to their bodies and minds, recognising when they need a "manatee moment" to relax and recharge.

The Benefits of Quiet Time for Kids

This letter is a great way to introduce children to the idea that rest doesn’t always mean sleep.

"Manatee moments" can look like:

  • Curling up with a book
  • Colouring or drawing
  • Listening to music

Many children (and adults!) struggle with the idea of "doing nothing," but this letter teaches them that being still is just as important as being busy.

Bringing the Lesson to Life!

Encourage your child to find their own manatee moment by trying one of these fun activities:

  • Floating Still: Lie on the floor or bed with your arms out and imagine floating like a manatee in warm water.
  • Find a "Manatee Spot": Help your child pick a cosy, quiet place where they can go when they need a break.

These small moments teach mindfulness, self-care, and emotional regulation in a fun and engaging way!

Inside the Envelope: Sticker & Colouring Fun!

This letter comes with a sparkling manatee sticker, a reminder that slowing down is a positive thing! Encourage your child to place it somewhere they can rest and wind down.

Also included is a colouring-in sheet, where your child can create their own peaceful underwater lagoon. Will their lagoon have floating jellyfish, sparkling seaweed, or a hidden mermaid cave? Let them create a space that feels calm and magical!
